           Dinner: 5:30-6:30pm
           Presentation: 6:30-7:30pm

           1670 Portage Avenue
Speaker: Paul Newton, MBA, PMP

Organizations have historically dealt with diversity in terms of race, gender, disabilities, etc. They now have to deal with extreme age differences among members of the five generations working together side by side. Since each generation has different expectations for how they want to work, learn and communicate, human resources need to adapt and change their talent management processes to appeal to all generations. As globalization, constant connectivity, mobility, social learning, collaboration and contribution are becoming more and more pervasive, HR has to become more integral to ensure the organization's success. We will show you how HR can succeed in this rapidly changing work environment.

Connecting to the pulse of business means tapping in to people's real motivations: supporting cultures where great ideas thrive; creating experiences that customers love; and finding all the way that 'soft' influences align with 'hard' performance indicators.

If you have solutions, experiences and stories  to share with Manitoba's HR professionals consider becoming a presenter at Connect 2014: Pulse. New HR professionals will be searching for solutions, resources and connections and experienced professionals will be looking for practical tools to apply to their workplaces and build on their experience. We invite you to submit a proposal to deliver a concurrent session and to inspire and engage conference attendees with leading research, emerging trends, case studies, panel discussions and interactive experiences.

Bringing together HR professionals of every level, Connect 2014: Pulse is your opportunity to showcase your commitment to the human resources profession, to significantly increase your visibility to this key group of professionals, and to network and engage those who make a difference every day.

For the application package or more information, please click here.

The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education invites you to participate in an upcoming networking event for full-time Human Resource Management students - a Resumania. We believe that our students would value your experience and expertise in this industry and the insight you could bring this forum.

Resumania is based on the speed-mentoring concept. It will provide our students with the opportunity to meet one-on-one with recognized HR professionals and get feedback on their resumes. Students will move round-robin across 20 stations, where they will have 6 minutes with each professional. We will end the evening with a Mix & Mingle Hors d'Oeuvres networking hour.

Please consider the following information to determine your availability:

Date: Thursday, April 3, 2014
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
Venue: 2M70 (2nd Floor, Manitoba Hall, Room 70, Main Campus)
Refreshments: Hors d'Oeuvres to follow

A small commitment of time will make a huge difference to our students. In a tight job market for new professionals, a strong resume can open doors, which might otherwise be closed to new graduates. We hope to see you at this event.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Mekela Wickramasinghe at me.wickramasinghe@uwinnipeg.ca or 204-982-1143.

Recent Stats Canada report on Caregiving highlights Manitoba as having the second highest number of caregivers in Canada. It is reported that 70% of these caregivers are balancing work and eldercare (1 in 4 employees age 45 and over), this number has tripled in the last 15 years.

A recent Winnipeg survey of almost 100 employees from 2 separate companies highlighted how employees are feeling increasingly stressed balancing their work and caregiving responsibilities. Some of the results showed:

  • 62% leave work early
  • 63% are at work but unable to focus
  • 46% miss a day of work
What can you do to support your employed caregivers? It has been shown that the more support the employed caregivers received in the workplace, the more they could successfully balance their responsibilities. This can be done through access to resources, lunch and learns, support groups, etc.

For assistance in implementing some of these resources and supports in your workplace, please contact Julie Donaldson of the Manitoba Caregiver Coalition at 204-953-3720 or mb.caregivercoalition@yahoo.com

Every two years, the Boston Consulting Group conducts a survey called "Creating People Advantage".

It is done in conjunction with the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA) which is an affiliation of around 90 HR associations worldwide representing over 600,000 HR professionals (www.wfpma.com).

The study aims to identify key HR priorities and understand the current challenges and opportunities that companies are facing around the globe and is the largest and most comprehensive study series in the world on people management trends in business.

The 2014 survey is now open for participation and will investigate the latest trends in:

  • HR data analytics
  • Business impact of HR
  • HR target operating model
  • Leadership and talent management
  • Enabling high-performance HR
Additionally, the Creating People Advantage researchers are searching for the most innovative HR practices through an HR innovation competition.

An invitation to complete the survey is being sent to every member of the Canadian provincial HR Associations and you can participate by opening the link www.bcg.com/cpa2014.

Please note the close date is 15 April 2014.

There are no costs involved. We will get a tailor-made analysis of trends and priorities for Canada/North America and an advance copy of the new 2014 report when it is complete, both of which we will share with our members.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

This year, Manitoba's HR and Leadership conference will be held in Winnipeg on October 29th & 30th at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg.

If human resources (HR) professionals do just one thing this year, it should be focused on fostering a learning culture that makes employees more productive and happy. This was one of the primary messages from a panel of experts who gathered at the 11th annual SAPInsider Human Resource (HR) 2014 Conference held this week in Orlando, Florida. These industry analysts shared insights with a sizeable crowd of human resources (HR) professionals from around the world during a roundtable that was hosted by Bill Kutik, HR Tech columnist for Human Resource Executive, and entitled, "What you need to do immediately back at the office and next year."
