American manufacturers grew somewhat less rapidly in July, held back by shortages of skilled labor, higher costs for raw materials due to tariffs and difficulty getting enough transportation. The Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index dipped to 58.1 percent in July, from 60.2 percent. That’s the lowest reading since April, though it’s still a strong number overall.

Rollys-Royce — which makes engines for large civil aircrafts, military planes, ships and trains — reported that its underlying operating profit rose to $265.3 million in the first half of the year, up from $182.5 million during the same period last year. The news comes as the company revealed that it is set to pay to address issues with its Trent 1000 engine, which powers the Boeing 787 aircraft.

Schaeffler will acquire drive-by-wire technology Space Drive from Paravan, which the German supplier said would play a key role in future self-driving cars. Space Drive was developed by Paravan to help people with physical disabilities. It allows vehicles to be steered and stopped by purely electronic means, eliminating the need for a steering wheel or steering column.

The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. has decreased by four this week to 1,044. At this time a year ago, there were 954 active rigs. Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 859 rigs drilled for oil this week and 183 for gas.
