High-value economic growth in the United States is heavily reliant on just seven industries, finds a new report from the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. While the advanced industries sector continues to grow overall in spite of slowing demand worldwide, three auto manufacturing and four high-tech digital services industries are now responsible for two-thirds of that growth.

June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $323.7 million according to AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 10.5 percent from June 2015, but was up 17.5 percent from May. Year-to-date, total orders were $1,833.9 million, down 15.8 percent compared to the same point in 2015.

The Institute for Supply Management manufacturing index for July dipped 0.6 points to 52.6, signaling slightly slower growth in U.S. factory activity. Economists had expected an unchanged reading of 53.2.

The economy added 255,000 jobs between June and July, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. 38,000 of those jobs were in government (federal, state and local) and 9,000 were in manufacturing. The 9,000 manufacturing jobs added in July follows an increase of 15,000 in June, which the National Association of Manufacturers called "an encouraging sign."

Manufacturing orders in Germany surprisingly declined on the month in June on a sharp drop in orders from within the Eurozone, data from the country's economy ministry showed Friday. The data point to stagnation in the country's key industrial sector and suggest only moderate economic growth in coming months in Europe's largest economy. Orders fell by 0.4% in adjusted terms versus expectations in a Wall Street Journal survey of 0.5% growth. Foreign orders declined by 1.2% while domestic orders rose by 0.7%. The data showed that orders from the rest of the Eurozone sharply fell by 8.5% on the month, while those from non-Eurozone states rose by 3.8%.

German industrial production increased in June, signaling that Europe’s largest economy gained momentum ahead of the U.K.’s Brexit vote. Production, adjusted for seasonal swings, rose 0.8 percent from the previous month, when it dropped a revised 0.9 percent, data from the Economy Ministry in Berlin showed on Monday. The reading, which is typically volatile, compared with a median estimate for a 0.7 percent gain in a Bloomberg survey. Output was up 0.5 percent from a year earlier.
