The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of non-manufacturing activity fell to 53.4 from 53.5 the month before. The reading was just above expectations of 53.2 from a Reuters poll of 81 economists.

New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods in January rose by the most in 10 months as demand picked up broadly, offering a ray of hope for the downtrodden manufacturing sector. While other data on Thursday showed new applications for unemployment benefits increased last week, they remained below levels associated with a tightening labor market.
