As President Obama said during his final State of the Union Address, American manufacturing is surging with almost 900,000 new jobs created in the past six years. While that’s incredible progress, how do we take manufacturing to the next level? The answer could be found in the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI).

No matter what issues the presidential candidates raise in their speeches, this election is about one thing: What will be the future of the United States? If we want a future that produces better opportunities and raising standards of living, then we need to strengthen our global economic leadership. To do that, we will have to marshal all the human talent available to us.

U.S. factory activity shrank in January for a fourth straight month as a strong dollar and weak demand overseas pinched American manufacturers, the Institute for Supply Management said Monday.

The ISM's manufacturing index ticked up to 48.2 from a revised 48 in December, but any reading below 50 signals a contraction. The index has remained below 50 since September.

A key report on U.S. manufacturing in January showed the sector contracted for the fourth straight month but the pace of deterioration stabilized. The Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index rose to 48.2% last month from 48% in December. That was higher than the 48% forecast of economists surveyed by MarketWatch.

When the Milwaukee area PMI showed a positive reading for the first time in nearly a year it provided a bit of good news for a manufacturing industry that has seen plenty of bad headlines in recent months. Citing declining production, falling oil and commodity prices, a strong dollar and trouble in developing markets, a Moody’s report in January said "the case for a prolonged slowdown is building."

Demand for manufactured products sank sharply last year, a rare occurrence outside a recession. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the six-and-a-half-year-old expansion is about to end.

Orders for durable goods, long-lasting products such as appliances and machinery, declined 3.5% in 2015 from a year earlier, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The drop is largest annual decline outside a recession on records back to 1992. (It’s only the fifth annual decline in 24 years.)

With 2016 upon us, I’ve been combing analysts’ predictions of changes they see coming to the manufacturing industry — and combining them with my own observations of how well today’s ERP technologies can support these changes. There’s no doubt: this is an exciting time in manufacturing. What would have seemed impossibly futuristic a few years ago is already happening on a few leading-edge factory floors today. Consider these trends... and start planning out your strategy for using them to gain competitive advantage.

We must look at the whole Make in India campaign in a much broader context. The Indian economy is presently $2 trillion plus. It has the potential to be, as the PM said last year on the same platform, $20 trillion. It is just a matter of time when we reach there. We will be there surely, looks like sooner than later.

Rapid advances in Information Technology have created new ways to communicate and share information. The company-customer relationship has shifted from transactional to interactive, giving consumers more power and making companies more responsive.

This has forced companies to rethink and reengineer the way they connect and interact with their customers. New types of customer service are being created due to the changing nature of the customer relationship. Banking and retail have been front-runners in customer engagement, due to the ability to have instant and ongoing exchanges with customers.
