Here's an astounding statistic: more than two-thirds of all U.S. manufacturing jobs last year likely were created in Michigan.

Just 30,000 of the nearly 2.7 million new private sector U.S. jobs in 2015 were in manufacturing, leading former auto czar Steven Rattner to tweet, "So much for (a) manufacturing renaissance."

Rochester, N.Y.-based Gleason Corporation acquired the gear cutting tools business from Hurth Infer Indústria de Máquinas e Ferramentas Ltda., in Sorocaba, Brazil.  Renamed Gleason Indústria de Ferramentas Ltda., the business includes shaving cutters, shaper cutters, and chamfering and deburring tools, and tool sharpening services for those products.

Mooney International Corp. has successfully completed the first flight of the M10T proof of concept (POC) aircraft. The first flight occurred on Dec. 23, 2015, in the vicinity of the Chino Airport in California. The flight lasted approximately 15 minutes, with test pilot Len Fox conducting basic flight maneuvers and verifying design data. At the conclusion of the flight, Fox was greeted by a crowd of engineers from the M10 team enthused to see their new design take flight for the first time.

Through 11 months of consumption data, U.S. manufacturers’ cutting-tools purchases are down 4.1% compared to the January-November 2014 total.

The Department of Defense disclosed on December 30 that it has ordered 32 more C-130J Super Hercules airlifters from Lockheed Martin, the first installment of a multiyear contract for 78 of the four-engine turboprops that will ultimately be worth $5.3 billion.  This is good news for the joint force, which relies on an aging fleet of C-130s for everything from airdropping troops to resupplying remote bases to conducting special operations to attacking ground targets to rescuing downed airmen to aerial refueling of other aircraft.

The Italian machine tool industry, one of the largest in the world, finished 2015 with "double-figure increases" in production volume, total sales, and exports, according to the year-end summary issued by UCIMU-Sistemi per Produrre. The trade group also predicted continued strong results for 2016 are expected.
