A preliminary reading on U.S. manufacturing activity in November indicated a slowdown during the month. Markit's flash U.S. manufacturing purchasing manager's index (PMI) came in at 52.6, the lowest level in 25 months.

Each year, the Fall Technical Meeting (FTM) provides an outstanding opportunity to share ideas with others in the gear industry on design, analysis, manufacturing and application of gears, gear drives and related products, as well as associated processes and procedures. Authors have the opportunity to present the results of their work to an audience of knowledgeable professionals from the United States and around the world, and to participate in discussions with that audience. Papers should be original to the AGMA audience (not a previously published paper), technically accurate, relevant, and free of commercialism.

Community College of Vermont (CCV) is partnering with GE Aviation and Adecco Staffing USA, part of the world’s largest recruitment and workforce solutions provider, to offer a Certified Production Technician (CPT) course in Rutland, which began last week. This course is the first step in establishing a manufacturing pipeline to help GE address a skills gap at its Vermont facility, and to help workers receive the necessary training to fill open positions. Courses like the CPT help workers advance their careers by developing specialized skills that GE and other Vermont manufacturers are looking for in their new employees.

In making the transition from state lawmaker to a U.S. Congressman, Republican Glenn Grothman has learned a few things about national issues -- and his new district.

As a candidate in 2014, Grothman -- like the other Republicans seeking the open seat -- opposed the U.S. Export-Import Bank. Grothman called the agency a form of "corporate welfare" and promised not to support the institution. But employers in his district told him they are heavy users of the bank, which helps companies sell their goods and services in foreign countries by providing financing for export deals.

Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT), the world’s No.1 heavy machinery maker, put another nail in the mining industry’s coffin after reporting that its sales declined again in October, marking the 35th straight month of sustained drops.

The Peoria-based firm’s performance is often seen as a gauge of the health of the global economy, as its machines are huge, expensive, and used in different kinds of projects to which companies and governments are only likely to commit if they're confident in the economic outlook and their financial standing.
