Aerospace Manufacturing and Design Pratt & Whitney has launched the newest addition to its PurePower engine family, the PW1135G-JM engine, a 35,000 lb thrust class engine for the Airbus A321neo aircraft. The Geared Turbofan technology engine's higher thrust allows A321neo operators to fly routes of greater distance while carrying more passengers or larger payloads when operating out of high-altitude airports.
 
Bloomberg Mexico reported its third trade surplus in a row in April, the longest streak in almost two years, as manufacturing exports surged, signaling the economy is recovering from a poor start to the year.

Rolls-Royce Rolls-Royce recently revealed plans to develop key aero-engine technologies at its Dahlewitz site in Germany. This follows the ground-breaking in March of a new test-bed for power gearboxes, which will support the development of the next generation of aero-engine designs.
 
The Baltimore Sun John Danko got his Baltimore company's first 3-D printer four years ago, and he said it's given him a front-row seat for a manufacturing revolution. In an office across the street from the foundry where Danko Arlington's molten metal flows, he prints out the industrial patterns he said he could no longer find skilled workers to do by hand. Some see in this the potential for a change as substantial as the Industrial Revolution — a different way of making things that could kick-start tiny operations, disrupt entire industries and literally transform the landscape.

Portland Tribune Two of the largest industrial companies in the Portland region are merging. Oregon Iron Works and Vigor Industrial announced the companies are joining forces. According to officials from the two companies, the merger creates the critical mass of innovation, infrastructure and financial strength needed to pursue even more complex projects, enter new markets and win more work than either could separately.
 
The AGMA Foundation offers $5,000 college scholarships to mechanical engineering students who are pursuing careers in gear manufacturing. Three scholarships were awarded in 2013 and the Foundation looks forward to awarding multiple scholarships again in 2014. The scholarships are made possible by contributions to the Foundation’s Annual Campaign.

Shopfloor The HSBC Flash China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reported some degree of progress in May, particularly for sales demand and production. The headline PMI figure moved slightly higher, up from 48.1 in April to 49.7 in May. On the one hand, it suggests that overall manufacturing sentiment continues to contract, with PMI values below 50 for five straight months. Yet, the pace of the decline appears to be slowing, which could be a sign of stabilization for the market.
 
Argus Leader A Sioux Falls manufacturer is expanding its building and hiring more people. Westland Manufacturing is a full-service provider of metal fabrication, from design to finishing. The company is known for making enclosures to house various electronics, servers or heavy equipment — although it has a range of products and services.
 
Forest City Gear Company
Seacoastonline Jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney has announced that United Parcel Service Inc. will open a 600,000-square-foot distribution center in New Hampshire. The East Hartford, Conn.-based company said that the UPS facility will receive parts, store and build manufacturing and assembly kits, manage inventory and provide freight transportation.
 
Ubergizmo According to a paper in the Environmental Science and Technology, it has been found that more efficient turbines can be created by making the towers higher, and the rotors longer. Unfortunately this means that wind farm operator will have to replace all their current turbines with new ones, or does it? According to GE, they have found that this might not necessarily have to be the case, as they can swap out the current rotors with new ones.
 
The Post and Courier Boeing's decision in 2009 to build its newest jetliner in South Carolina was skewered by some as a miscalculation, especially among the rank-and-file in Washington state, home of the company's commercial aircraft division. The pointed pessimism has since softened considerably as Boeing has continued to plow more money into its North Charleston operations.
