PRWeb The Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC), on behalf of the American Small Manufacturers Coalition (ASMC) and the Manufacturing Performance Institute (MPI), recently released the full results of its 2013 Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) study. The NGM study identifies six key strategies which a manufacturer must attain to be considered world class. Importantly, comparing 2013 results to the 2011 and prior studies identifies several trends.
 
The Indy Channel GE Aviation officials said Wednesday that a $100 million jet engine manufacturing factory that it's building in Lafayette will be a key in producing its new-generation engine for passenger airliners.The company already has orders for more than 6,000 of its new LEAP engine that's now undergoing development testing and will have its final assembly at the Lafayette factory, said David Joyce, the president and CEO of GE Aviation.
 
Times News The Tennessee Department of Education will be looking at Cherokee High School's robotics class as it develops a high school robotics curriculum for use across the state. At the same time, the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCAT) in both Morristown and Surgoinsville are looking to align their own programs with the Cherokee class so that students can make a seamless transition into the TCAT program after high school graduation.

Bloomberg Canada’s gross domestic product rebounded in January as manufacturers led an expansion that was faster than economists anticipated. The world’s 11th largest economy grew by 0.5 percent to an annualized C$1.61 trillion ($1.46 trillion), recouping December’s 0.5 percent decline, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa.

Automotive News Chrysler Group’s Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant has become the first North American plant to achieve silver status under the automaker’s World Class Manufacturing system, Chrysler said today. That means the plant, which will be overhauled this year to build the next generation of the Chrysler Town & Country minivan, is Chrysler’s best performing and most productive plant on the continent.
 
The AGMA Foundation offers $5,000 college scholarships for engineering students who have an interest in gear technology or gear research. Three scholarships were awarded in 2013 and the Foundation looks forward to awarding multiple scholarships again in 2014. The scholarships are made possible by generous contributions to the Foundation’s Annual Campaign.

ShopFloor The U.S. economy grew 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the most recent revision, and for 2013 as a whole, real GDP growth was a rather lackluster 1.9 percent. Consumer spending, business investment and net exports were bright spots in the fourth quarter, with reduced government spending subtracting nearly one percentage point from growth.
 
Nasdaq Italian manufacturing business confidence rose again in March thanks to an improved orders outlook, national statistics institute Istat said Thursday. Confidence among Italy's manufacturers rose to 99.2 in March--its highest level since July 2011--from 99.1 in February, according to Istat's monthly survey.

The Manufacturer Aero engine manufacturers Rolls-Royce have secured a £665m deal with All Nippon Airways to provide its fleet of 25 Boeing 787 Dreamliners with Trent 1000 engines. The engines powered the first 787 into service with ANA in 2011 and have completed more than 220,000 in-service flying hours.
 
Energy Matters Altaeros Energie says it is set to break the world record for the highest wind turbine ever deployed. The next generation - the BAT (Buoyant Airborne Turbine) - will see the Altaeros BAT set at a height of just over 300 metres above the ground and will be the first long-term demonstration of such a device.
