The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. and Watco Cos. L.L.C. today announced they've formed GBW Railcar Services L.L.C., a 50-50 joint venture that will own and operate Greenbrier's and Watco's respective rail-car repair, refurbishment and maintenance businesses. GBW will have the scale to meet the certification and maintenance requirements of the growing North American tank car fleet and expand rail-car repair service offerings for general freight cars, Greenbrier and Watco officials said in a press release. With current combined annual revenue of $325 million and a geographically diverse network, GBW will employ more than 2,100 employees, they said. Recent Greenbrier hire Jim Cowan will serve as GBW's chief executive officer.

Global public health organization NSF International is the first North American certification body to be accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to offer certification to the IFS Logistics (International Featured Standard Logistics) standard.

IFS Logistics establishes a uniform, common standard by which an organizations logistics activities can be evaluated. Used by companies that make both food and non-food products, the standard applies to all aspects of logistics: transport, storage, distribution, loading, unloading and delivery by road, rail or ship. NSFs accreditation to this standard means that NSFs auditors will be able to certify that companies meet the requirements of this standard, which is accepted globally and used by hundreds of distribution centers in more than 24 countries.

Truckload carrier Universal Truckload Services Inc. said today it has named Jeffery A. Rogers, former president of YRC Freight, to become Universal's CEO at the end of the year.

Rogers will succeed Scott Wolfe, who will retire from Universal when his employment contract expires at year's end. Universal said that Rogers has already come on board as executive vice president.

Wolfe today was named to Universal's board and will stay on as director after his retirement as CEO, the Warren, Mich.-based company said.

As the CPC looses retail partners, pallet rental companies gain ground in Canadian market.

After losing the largest grocery retailer in Canada last year, the Canadian Pallet Council (CPC), a cooperative grocery industry pool in Canada, is now teetering on the edge of irrelevance as more retailers jump ship and put the future of the program in jeopardy.

Last year Loblaw withdrew from participating in pallet exchange. In response, the CPC management team cut costs and put together a new management plant to deal with the changing retail landscape. But the CPC has struggled to make this plan work due to a number of factors, including changes in retail partner collaboration, reduction in pallet volumes, continued repair and logistics challenges, etc.
