The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has almost doubled fines that Navistar will have to pay for engines that don’t meet the agency’s emissions standards, according to a report from Reuters. The penalty for each non-compliant engine is now $3,775, up from the $1,919 Navistar had previously been paying.

The International Warehouse Logistics Association today urged California Gov. Jerry Brown to veto Assembly Bill 1855 (Torres). The bill regulates the form and content of contracts entered into by California’s warehouse industry. This bill, if enacted, would roll back 32 years of sensible working economic regulations strictly adhered to by California warehouse owners and operators. Most ironic, the bill reverses a policy this same governor enacted in 1980 during his first term.

A trucking firm has been ordered to reinstate a whistle-blower truck driver who refused to drive an explosive-filled truck with a co-driver who smoked. It will pay $315,000 in back wages and damages, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday. OSHA said it ordered M3 Transport L.L.C./SLT Expressway Inc., and its successors in interest, Lyons Capital L.L.C. and Glendale, Arizona-based Roadmaster Group, to pay the truck driver $315,000 for the firm's alleged violation of the whistle-blower provisions of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act.

North Bay trucking companies are spending millions of dollars on new trucks this year in order to meet tough air quality rules aimed at getting older, smoke-belching cabs off the road. The state has provided grants to help pay for new, high-tech diesels that emit a 10th of the air pollution that the 2006 models produce. The latest grants provide up to $60,000 toward a big-rig that can easily cost $130,000 or more.
