Two Colorado transportation officials were lauded by the White House for spearheading innovative approaches to solving transportation problems. Patriot Transportation Holding, Inc. reported net income of $2,684,000 or $.28 per diluted share, in the third quarter of fiscal 2012, an increase of $305,000, or 12.8%, compared to net income of $2,379,000, or $.25 per diluted share, in the same period last year. Net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2012 was $6,451,000, or $.68 per diluted share, a decrease of $4,006,000, or 38.3% compared to net income of $10,457,000, or $1.11 per diluted share, for the same period last year. Income from discontinued operations favorably impacted net income in fiscal 2011 due to an after tax gain of $4,926,000, or $.52 per diluted share, from the exchange of property.
 
YRC Worldwide reported a better quarter financially Friday, although the trucking firm is still not profitable.

The Overland Park, Kan.-based carrier reported a loss of $22.1 million in the quarter ending June 30, equating to a loss of $3.21 per share. The company lost $41.3 million during the same three-month period in 2011.

Voters across Georgia are deciding whether to levy a penny sales tax to fund transportation projects in their communities. Supporters have spent $8 million trying to convince voters that the plan will add jobs, ease congestion and improve quality of life. The plan has been endorsed by Republican state leaders, including Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston, in addition to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a Democrat.

As metro Atlanta voters hurled an $8 million sales tax campaign into the trash, Gov. Nathan Deal held what aides called his first session with top transportation officials to discuss Plan B. What voters dismissed was a bottom-up list of $8 billion in road and rail projects created by local elected leaders. (Read the main AJC piece on the TSPLOST vote here.) The Plan B that staggered out of the governor’s office will be its polar opposite: dramatically smaller, paid for with shrinking funds and highly centralized. Projects will be hand-picked by a governor who intends to squeeze every penny available.
