Health Canada posts CDWQ Guidelines for Selenium

Health Canada, Environmental & Workplace Health, posted proposed new Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality – Guideline Technical Document-Selenium.

Selenium is a naturally occurring element that is a by-product of metal mining. In addition, it is used in the manufacture of organic chemicals, reducing agents, glass, paint, ceramic, electronic components, gun bluing agents, nutritional supplements, fertilizers, metallurgical applications and plumbing (as a replacement for lead).

The guidelines set a maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for total selenium in drinking water at 0.05 mg/L (50ug/L), based on new studies and approaches and the availability of appropriate treatment technology.
