A huge thank you goes out to all those who contributed to support the Case Management Foundation this June at the Case Management Society of America’s Annual Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. CMF was able to raise over $12,000 in donations, as well as receive feedback from the case management community that is shaping the way our one-of-a-kind organization will move forward.

One way that the Case Management Foundation – a charitable, not for profit organization created to support education, research, and professional development for case management professionals – supports case managers is through scholarship programs. CMF is accepting applications for the 2014 ICM Scholarship Program, a hardship scholarship that will cover registrations both sections of the ICM Program.

CMAG Helps Impact Education and Guidance for Case Managers

BY LORI J. SCHMITT, RN, MBA

Research by the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified medication non-adherence as one of the primary reasons for readmissions and emergency room visits. There is clearly a bottom-line impact on both clinical outcomes as well as financial significance. Research completed at the Mayo Clinic indicated that 50 percent of patients do not take medications as prescribed. Identification of non-adherence is challenging. This article also stated that non-adherence is responsible for 11 percent of hospital readmissions.

Final rule strengthens tie between payment and quality improvement

The final rule issued today by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) adopts improvements in the quality of care that limit payment for hospital acquired conditions (HACs) and readmissions. The rule, which updates Medicare payment policies and rates for inpatient stays at general acute care and long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) for fiscal year (FY) 2015, builds on the administration’s efforts for better hospital patient outcomes and slowing the long-term health care cost growth. The rule also supports price transparency by reminding hospitals of the Affordable Care Act requirement to post or otherwise make their charges available to patients and the public.

CDC data provides baseline for EHR adoption among health care providers

Significant increases in the use of electronic health records (EHRs) among the nation’s physicians and hospitals are detailed in two new studies published by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). The studies, published in the journal Health Affairs, found that in 2013, almost eight in ten (78 percent) office-based physicians reported they adopted some type of EHR system. About half of all physicians (48 percent) had an EHR system with advanced functionalities in 2013, a doubling of the adoption rate in 2009.
