On The Move
On the heels of the very successful 2013 Hall of Leaders Awards Gala, held in conjunction with IMEX America 2013 in Las Vegas, the Convention Industry Council is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2014 Hall of Leaders & Pacesetter Awards are now open.

"The Hall of Leaders represents intelligence and leadership, ideas and innovation, influencers and risk-takers—the true pioneers of the industry," said Karen Kotowski, CAE, CMP, CIC’s Chief Executive Officer.

For three decades, CIC’s Hall of Leaders has honored those outstanding leaders and innovators whose contributions have shaped the industry and whose efforts continue to inspire and improve it.

The Pacesetter Award, established in 2012, recognizes individuals for contributions to the industry in areas such as:

•Young Professionals
•Community Service, Sustainability and CSR
•Innovation
•Friend of the Industry
•Chairman’s Award

"The addition of the Pacesetter Awards allows us to honor achievement in real time and recognize the people whose recent accomplishments chart a course for where the industry is now and where it will be in the future," said Karen Kotowski. "They are tomorrow’s lifetime achievement winners."

To date, 111 pioneers have been inducted into the Hall of Leaders and seven professionals have received Pacesetter Awards. A complete listing of the previous HOL award winners, along with pictures from the 2013 fete can be found on the CIC website.

CIC is now looking for the next class of forward thinkers and risk-takers. Do you know an established or emerging leader or industry supporter worthy of such recognition? If so, please read the nomination process guidelines and consider submitting a nomination form, found here

Nominations may be submitted either by CIC member organizations or the general industry community. The deadline for nomination submission forms to be received in the CIC office is 5 p.m. EST on Monday, February 3, 2014. All essays and supplemental material must be received in the CIC office by 5 p.m. EST on Monday, February 17, 2014, without exception. Those chosen to receive this distinguished honor will be formally announced in the summer of 2014 and inducted at an awards ceremony later in the year.

Help Make the CMP Exam Great
The CMP exam is written and reviewed by meeting professionals such as you. Without the expertise of those who have already earned the CMP designation, the exam would not be a true reflection of today’s meeting industry.

CIC is seeking volunteers to help review the exam items before they appear on the test. We put out a call for volunteers not too long ago and got many willing participants. (Thanks to all who filled out the form!) We are still seeking item reviewers before we make the final assignments. By volunteering, you are not only giving back to the profession, you will also be earning clock hours for your recertification.

The Item Review Panel meets once a month for approximately two hours (virtually). But we don’t expect you to be on every call! Volunteers are asked to make a two-year commitment to sit on the review panel and agree to attend at least four meetings a year. If you would like to be a part of this panel, please fill out this form and return it to cichq@conventionindustry.org. Thank you.

Share a Positive Impact & Help Change the World!
Sustainability is a global force that is changing the face of the meetings and events industry. There are a number of sustainability initiatives that have been created for the industry and best practices that are becoming a recognized part of the professional landscape. But we don’t always hear about—or share—these developments. The Share a Positive Impact Campaign was launched this month to help change that.

Created by the not-for-profit Positive Impact, this campaign gives anyone in the world the chance to share any economic, social or environmental practice at an event that they found inspirational. It could be something as practical as clearly labeled recycling bins or a best practice like local food sourcing.

You can post pictures and use hashtags on Twitter and Pinterest to share your inspirations and visit the website to read and support the inspirational messages and photos posted by other people. A global effort, there is even a map that shows inspirational action in events around the world, so you can see what’s inspiring others.

Start sharing now!
