The University Accreditation Program (UAP) completed its inaugural year in the summer. Volunteers, Accreditation Actuaries, and CIA staff have been busy assessing policy issues and measurements, planning, and obtaining feedback. A recent meeting provided an opportunity for an update.

A CIA subcommittee offered numerous suggestions in response to an exposure draft from the International Accounting Standards Board on accounting for insurance contracts. Here are the highlights.
 
A new study has forecast that Canada will suffer more than $60 bn worth of damage if it does not prepare for a major earthquake, prompting insurers’ representatives to call for a national strategy on earthquake response.
 
Enterprise risk management (ERM) is here to stay, but implementing an ERM framework can be easier at some organizations than others according to Pierre Laurin, the subject of the latest in our series of ERM practitioner profiles.
 
This new feature in the (e)Bulletin gives members an opportunity to tell their peers about themselves via the answers to 10 straightforward and fun questions. The questionnaire is a way of temporarily turning the focus away from the day-to-day work of actuarial science and more towards the people who make up the profession.
 
A student’s passion for mathematics and academic achievement has been recognized with the award of the Hugh G. White Memorial Scholarship for 2013 from the Actuarial Foundation of Canada.
