Mark Your Calendar for the 2014 CIA Seminars

This year’s CIA Annual Meeting may now be over, but the Head Office is already hard at work preparing for the next series of Institute events: the specialty seminars.

Actuarial Evidence Seminar—Toronto, September 12–13

The 2014 Actuarial Evidence (AE) Seminar is being held in Canada’s largest hotel, the Eaton Chelsea in downtown Toronto, giving participants easy access to top-class facilities and all that the city centre has to offer. AE practitioners can expect another fascinating series of sessions this time: the program includes presentations on such varied subjects at the importance of AE to the CIA’s strategic objectives, landmark legal decisions, structured settlements, fatalities, and earnings tabulations.

Seminar for the Appointed Actuary—Toronto, September 22–23

As always, this seminar will be filled with unmissable sessions of interest to appointed actuaries and others, along with networking opportunities and more. The plenary session will focus on investments like real estate and equities, offering advice on their attributes and how to handle them. Other presentations will cover topics like economic capital modelling, auto reform, and reserve analyses.

The program is still being drawn up, but the luncheon speaker has already been confirmed: Dr. Greg Wells, CTV’s sport science analyst and a human physiologist. Dr. Wells has coached and inspired dozens of athletes to win medals at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and the Olympics. He is the author of Superbodies: Peak Performance Secrets from the World’s Best Athletes, a book which decodes the science behind Olympic performance to understand the magic of the human body and includes high-performance tips for people of all ages and abilities to improve their health and fitness.

Pension Seminar—Montréal, November 4

A highlight of this year’s event will be luncheon speaker Chantal Hébert, political raconteur and award-winning journalist. Besides writing for the Toronto Star, Le Devoir, and L’Actualité, she is also a weekly participant on the political panel At Issue on CBC TV’s The National. Mme Hébert has worked in the media for almost 40 years, bringing her expertise to bear on a wide range of topics. She is also a regular participant in a number of French-language television and radio current affairs programs and is a senior fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto. A member of the Order of Canada, she is the author of French Kiss: Stephen Harper’s Blind Date with Quebec.

Investment Seminar—Montréal, November 5

The 2014 Investment Seminar will be held at the Montréal Hilton Bonaventure, a venue that has proved very popular with attendees at other CIA events. This year it will host a day filled with sessions from thought leaders and high-profile practitioners, so be sure to book your accommodation early.

As details of each seminar are finalized, they will be added to the relevant pages on the CIA website. To ensure you stay up to date, bookmark the List of All Upcoming Events page.
