The Institute is in Good Hands

By Jacques Lafrance, FCIA
CIA President 2013-2014

I can hardly believe that my term as President is at its end. The last 12 months have gone by very fast. Too fast.

I am proud of the work performed by the CIA officers, the Board members, the councils, the Head Office staff, and all the volunteers who work really hard on the numerous committees and task forces of the CIA.

We made significant progress in the last 12 months. Here are a few highlights of this year:

Despite the progress we have made and all these initiatives, I still have an appetite for more. These 12 months have gone by too quickly. We still have much to do.

We have significant challenges. For example, there are many people who perform actuarial services in Canada and who are not members of our organization. We need to find ways to attract these people so that they become and remain CIA members. I would hope that the CIA staff and volunteers will spend much effort on that front in the coming months.

Another significant challenge is the need to expand the reach of our profession. The public and the potential buyers of actuarial services need to better understand the expertise and skills that we can bring to the table. This will not be accomplished within a few months. It will take time. The good news is that we have already started working on this initiative.

With the adoption of our strategic plan, I feel that the CIA is on the right track. With my successor Jacques Tremblay and my subsequent successor Rob Stapleford, and all the other people contributing to the CIA activities, plus the staff under the excellent leadership of Michel Simard, I am confident about the future of the CIA and the actuarial profession. What I also find reassuring is the high level of commitment of members to the Institute.

My year as President of the CIA was a wonderful experience that I will never forget. I am looking forward to serving as Immediate Past President for the next year.

My last word would be to thank you for providing me with this great opportunity.
