In a recent conversation with the Community College Journal (April/May 2009), U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan acknowledged that "Community colleges are a vital part of our nation's higher education system, serving nearly 40 percent of America's college students...for some students, especially during these tough economic times, community colleges offer a convenient and affordable path to a bachelor's degree." Duncan continued, "Community colleges are also a great source of job training and workforce development. They offer the kind of flexibility that adult learners and working students need."

As a supervisor, you make many decisions every day - some simple, some difficult. One of the most difficult decisions a supervisor will ever make is to terminate an employee. This article is not intended to address legal or human resource issues or how to terminate an employee, but rather to identify some issues that a supervisor needs to consider immediately before and after you have met with the employee.

Terminating an employee can be stressful and it is not uncommon that you may fail to consider some simple tasks that need to be performed. To minimize this potential, you should create a checklist of action items, to ensure matters are not overlooked.

Education
Inside Higher Ed, July 15, 2009

On Tuesday, President Obama -- as he promised he would -- placed community colleges in the center of his plans to revitalize the American economy. He proposed billions in new spending -- for job training programs, improvements in basic skills education, facilities and free online education -- to focus on two-year institutions.

Inside Higher Ed, July 13, 2009

President Obama is getting ready to unveil his plan to help community colleges improve the job skills of Americans. Writing in The Washington Post on Sunday, Obama stressed the importance of community colleges. "In an economy where jobs requiring at least an associate's degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs requiring no college experience, it's never been more essential to continue education and training after high school. That's why we've set a goal of leading the world in college degrees by 2020. Part of this goal will be met by helping Americans better afford a college education. But part of it will also be strengthening our network of community colleges," Obama wrote, saying he would be talking about this issue during the week ahead.

Community colleges are thrilled that President Obama is planning a major infusion of federal support for their job training programs, and they are talking about how best this might be done.
