CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Dear BOMA New York Members,

As many of you know, we had the pleasure of celebrating our grand 50th anniversary last week! Can you believe it? Fifty years!

The celebration was a tremendous success and was made possible by all the hard work and dedication of our leadership, esteemed members and sponsors. We were joined by 13 BOMA New York former presidents, public officials, and our members and guests. We hope to keep the momentum going and aspire to celebrate another 50 years with even more accomplishments!

Additionally, I’m proud to acknowledge that our new website is up and running! The website is such an essential tool in learning about BOMA New York events, sponsorships, members and more! We also launched our BOMA New York Instagram and Snapchat last week!

Next month, we have our annual conference and leadership breakfast on November 2nd. You can learn more about it in our upcoming events section of this newsletter. I encourage you all to attend and I hope to see you there!

BOMA New York is gearing up for another big event as well, our 2018 Pinnacle Awards! Although the awards will be held on February 22, 2018, the committee has begun soliciting advertisements for the Pinnacle Guide Book and sponsorships. We are asking for your support by considering a congratulatory message to the nominees or taking a sponsorship. Let’s make the 2018 Pinnacle Awards another success. You can find more information about this event below, in the upcoming events section.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at a BOMA New York event soon.

Sincerely,

James R. Kleeman, RPA

President of BOMA/NY

Get to Know Your Board

Welcome to the "Get to Know Your Board" section of the monthly newsletter. Each month, we interview and feature a different board member to help you get to know them better. This month, we sat down with Michael Spagnola, with L&L Holdings. Let's read what Michael had to say.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

In September for Climate Week, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced sweeping plans to reduce fossil fuel use, and therefore emissions, from existing buildings' heating and cooling systems. The plan lacked details, but those were to come in the form of draft legislation that was supposed to be introduced as early as October and passed by the end of the year.

New Website Launch

We've been talking about it for a while, and our new website is finally LIVE! Please visit us at bomany.org! The newly design website was a part of our long-range plan and it's first accomplishment. The newly designed website boasts a smoother interface and a better user experience. Check it out and let us know what you think. Email us at bobbimc@bomany.com to share your feedback.

Tech Bytes Launch

Earlier this month, our technology committee launched a new tech series, Tech Bytes. The goal of the programming series is to inform, educate, and showcase the latest technological tools and advances helping building owners and property managers. The first programming event, a live demonstration from FST Biometrics, is scheduled for next month!

BOMA International just released the newest version of its office standard, BOMA 2017 for Office Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.1—2017). The new office standard features many new enhancements to address the changing office building landscape, including:

1. An easy-to-follow, step-by-step layout rewritten in simplified language with helpful hints, additional illustrations and an expanded Glossary of Terms;

2. Best practice guidance developed following the publication of the 2010 Office Standard to address ambiguities and inconsistences;

3. Fully compatible with the International Property Measurement Standard for Office Buildings; and

4. Methodology to address tenant amenities, such as rooftop terraces, balconies and covered galleries.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, we hosted our monthly Lunch & Learn titled the Art of Managing Construction Risks. We had the pleasure of hearing from Greenberg Traurig's National Construction Law Practice Co-Chair Robert Epstein. The event identified four primary risk areas (cost overruns, defects, failures, nonconformities, differing site conditions, and delay) on construction projects and examined how owners can minimize these risks to achieve a successful project. We thank everyone that attended and our speaker Robert Epstein. Click HERE to view photos from the Lunch and Learn.

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, we hosted our LEED Demand Response Lunch & Learn. The lunch event counted for one hour of LEED CE as the presenter walked through the new LEED EB v4 credits available (up to three points) for Demand Response, and included an update on LEED and Energy Star progress for New York City buildings. The event also included tips on how to handle the new LEED v2 and New York City Demand Response programs.
