Building maintenance and operations — often an overlooked but crucial part of a building's lifecycle — can track several data sets, such as air quality, lighting, utility data, leasing data, thermal comfort, HVAC, weather, waste and recycling, security and occupancy. Gathering this kind of information can lead to smarter business decisions, according to Shuntorov. He said that if gathered and used effectively, insights gained from building data can reduce energy costs by approximately 17%. "It’s hard to answer business questions without data," Shunturov said. "We have no idea how buildings perform after we build them, and that’s the journey organizations are beginning to embark on."

Companies left downtown Dallas in droves in the 1980s, and it went on to have the emptiest office market in the nation in the early 1990s. Stonehenge stood as a negative symbol for years. But that era is over. Today, downtown Dallas is a different place. Stonehenge has been replaced by Hall Group’s new 18-story Hall Arts office tower—the first office project built in the central business district in years. In downtown’s Arts District, new performance halls and museums have been erected. The new Klyde Warren Park, a transformative downtown recreational haven built over a below-grade freeway, attracts scads of people every day of the week. And perhaps most important, dozens of older office buildings have been converted to residential use, giving rise to a more active street life.

At Klyde Warren Park in Dallas and Discovery Green in Houston, the public and private sectors have worked together to create parks with innovative amenities that both communities have embraced. From restaurants to performance stages, these parks have become widely known as much for the experiences they offer as the open space they provide. How is Austin working with the private sector to improve our parks and what can we learn from these success stories?
