Message From The President
The year is off to a great start! For the first time, we held our state officer elections online. One more step towards a more sustainable organization. I would like to offer a special thanks to all of those who participated in the elections this year, particularly our Administrator, Sharlyn Underwood, who answered all those pesky questions—including mine.

I would like to devote the rest of my piece this month to congratulating one of my students at Virginia Tech. Jessie Oliver, the current Student Chapter President at VT, just found out she won one of the three awards given in the National ASID Student Competition this year! Congratulations Jessie!

Chapter News
Because of my position as the legislative liaison for our chapter, I was copied recently on e-mails between two members who have given permission for me to borrow heavily from their correspondence.

The topic has to do with the appellation "CID." Consumers may very well think it means "Certified Interior Decorator" as that is one of the first items that pop up when you Google "CID." The question was addressed to Cameron Stiles, CID, FASID, a member of the APELSCIDLA Board. "Is there any mechanism in the Commonwealth to prevent those who have been certified by Certified Interior Decorators International from using this appellation and causing confusion among the public?"

Congratulations to Peggy Joy Cross, ASID, who has been asked by Dean Jim Perkinson to create a full semester 3 credit course in Feng Shui for Tidewater Community College. This course is expected to be offered for the first time during the summer semester of 2010 at the Chesapeake campus.

For those that don't know me, I hope that you attend ASID local events. ASID VA Career Day is a great event, and it is inspiring to see students' portfolios. I hope to see you at the IDEA Awards Gala in September. It is worth the trip to Richmond to see the Award Winning Projects and get to mingle with peers.

When designers are working with clients and evaluating LEED certification requirements knowledge of Energy Star could be an asset. I know we don't get particularly involved in energy considerations when designing an interior environment, but we can surely have an influence in discussions with architects, engineers and client representatives when energy conservation issues are brought up in meetings and other venues.

Energy Star provides resources for managing energy consumption across a variety of commercial building types. It's a fact that energy efficiency is the single most important way that organizations can reduce their energy use. Energy Star provide cost effective low risk and high return strategies for optimizing a building's environmental and financial performance.

Congratulations to Jessie Oliver, the current Student Chapter President at VT. Jessie just found out she won one of the three awards given in the National ASID Student Competition this year! Congratulations Jessie!

According to the competition coordinator: "This year, we received an astounding 126 entries all of which demonstrated creativity and solid effort. From this field of entries, the jury selected 13 as finalists. From the finalists, three projects were identified, two to receive honorable mention and one as the competition winner. I am pleased to inform you that your project Crysalis was designated to receive an Honorable Mention. You can be very proud to know that your project was among the top three of this very strong field of entries."
