Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the Healthcare Human Resources Association of Minnesota (HHRAM) spring conference. I had a blast. I also got a really cool jacket! Thank you HHRAM. The theme of the conference was "Got Engagement?" Over the course of a day and a half, we had speakers share best practices and ask thought-provoking questions, challenging us to think about engagement in non-traditional ways.

During the first evening, we enjoyed a cruise on the St. Croix River on a paddlewheel boat. It was the perfect environment for connection. As we enjoyed a beautiful view, we engaged in a moment of fellowship. I enjoyed the opportunity to hear what was on the minds of these talented HR leaders. While some of the members were focused on bringing organizations together and others were trying to identify strategies to remain independent with a focus on strategic alliances, it was clear to me that, in every situation, our landscape is changing and we are expected to help lead our organizations through these uncharted waters.

During our time together, we also had the opportunity to talk about the CHHR and the value it brings to us as health care human resources leaders. I was excited to hear about how many attendees were considering taking the exam, and I am confident that some of the tools in progress, such as the virtual study groups, will help provide another level of support for those engaged in their professional development through achieving CHHR certification. Please click here for more details about the certification.

As I think back on my time in Minnesota, I reflect on the value in bringing people together to have these conversations. Not only do we have the opportunity to learn from each other, we also have the ability to "let our hair down" and work through our own challenges and opportunities in a safe, supportive, collaborative environment. In a position where we are so often "on stage," it is nice to have an intermission and the opportunity to be vulnerable.

As I look to September, I get excited about the opportunity to connect at a national level. The annual conference provides us the opportunity to collaborate, learn and work through issues. It is an opportunity for fellowship. I would love to have the opportunity to connect with you and learn from our shared experiences. Please plan on attending the ASHHRA conference in Grapevine, Texas. You can click here for more information and to register.

A Senate appropriations subcommittee has approved legislation that would provide $161.9 billion in base discretionary funding for the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and related agencies in fiscal year 2017, $270 million less than this year. HHS programs would receive $76.9 billion, $1.4 billion more than in FY 2016, according to a committee summary.

Compensation
It's pretty well established that white men earn more than women, and that white people earn more than black people in the U.S. But that disparity should disappear for a highly trained and specialized field like medicine, right? Evidently not, according to a new study which showed that women and African-American physicians earn significantly less than their white male colleagues.

Health Care HR
It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that one of the most in-demand jobs today is for nursing positions. But a recent CareerBuilder survey showed that 46 percent of health care employers said the role they struggled to fill above all others was that of qualified registered nurses.

There’s a revolution going on in corporate human resources departments, and the much-hated annual performance review is in the cross-fire. Over the past few years, a fast-growing number of high-profile companies have been blowing up this annual rite of corporate life, replacing the traditional yearly review with something more frequent, less formal and, they hope—less reviled.

Management & Leadership
CEO turnover is an issue plaguing the health care industry—turnover rates were at 18 percent for 2015—but grooming potential leaders from within and having a plan for a potential succession can help ease the transition.

Patient Satisfaction
As patients assume the role of health care consumers, it's important that hospitals promote patient satisfaction data transparency to stay afloat. It’s not enough for health care organizations to simply collect patient satisfaction data. Promoting data transparency and actually using that data will be the key to helping practices improve in the long-run.

Patient portals are a regularly talked-about technology in a doctor's tool belt, but how can they use the portal to boost patient engagement? Patient portals go beyond providing patients with a window into which they can view their health data. Most portals include features such as direct secure messaging, online appointment scheduling, online bill payments, prescription refill requests, and sometimes even data update capabilities.

Workforce
Different generations of workers have different needs. Let's stop trying to pretend otherwise. Traditionally, recruitment, retention and engagement have been one-size-fits-all. It's been assumed that if something appeals to a middle-aged worker, it will delight a recent graduate equally. That strategy may have worked in the past, but differences among age groups must be taken into consideration as we have four—soon to be five—generations in the workforce today.

Health Care & Hospitals
Health care information is a highly coveted get for cybercriminals. In fact, IBM data shows that health care took the top spot in cyberattacks in 2015. Five of the eight largest breaches in health care since 2010 happened in the first six months of 2015, and more than 111 million health care records were compromised just that year.

In this interview, Susannah Fox, the chief technology officer of the Department of Health and Human Services and former entrepreneur-in-residence at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, discusses efforts to encourage innovation and explore unconventional solutions for problems in health and health care.
