Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

I love April – longer (hopefully warmer) days, spring break for the kiddos and the start of baseball season! Can it get any better?

This past week, I had an amazing time with my boys. I took time off to be with them for spring break. At one point, while we were out paddling around in a canoe, trying not to get tangled up in lily pads, my youngest asked me if I was on spring break. If you ever want to have an interesting Total Rewards conversation, try explaining the concept of PTO to a 10-year-old. My son was amazed by the generosity of my employer, letting me take time off with pay to play with my kids. He literally said to me, "Wow! Your boss is a really good guy!" ... Out of the mouths of babes!  As an HR leader, I was a little humbled by the conversation. How have I lost sight of how special that benefit truly is, to my family and for my own personal renewal?

This conversation really forced me to pull back the lens and look at all of the areas in my life. What are the amazing resources, benefits and connections in my life that I need to be intentionally celebrating? Immediately, my mind went to my ASHHRA membership.

I have so enjoyed my time as president; the conversations I have had with members; the invitations to attend state chapter meetings; the work and dedication of the board, committee members, volunteers and staff. It is fun to watch the level of creativity that comes with this dedication and passion, including:
  • Did you know that we have several ASHHRA members sitting for their CHHR exam on scholarships offered by ASHHRA? The scholarship has allowed HR professionals the opportunity to sit for an exam that will help distinguish them as a health care HR expert for the rest of their career. What a great investment ASHHRA has made for its members!
  • Have you hopped onto one of our Twitter chats? If you are not aware of this avenue to connect, I will challenge you to Tweet the members of our Learning and Education Committee, chaired by Lotus Yon. Not only are we connecting current members, we are also reaching future members, creating an even larger network of influence and support.
  • Have you booked your hotel and travel to Grapevine for the annual conference? I can’t think of another conference that has so much rich content, specific to the work we do, as well as time to connect and recharge.  It truly is ASHHRA’s PTO plan!
As the year marches forward, make sure to take some time to maximize the benefit that is your ASHHRA membership.

Play ball!

Compensation
CareerBuilder’s Q2 2016 U.S. Job Forecast revealed that the U.S. job market can plan for another successful quarter of growth. A survey of more than 2,000 hiring managers and HR professionals found that 69 percent of employers plan to increase compensation during the next three months; 25 percent expect that increase to be at least 5 percent, and 44 percent say this salary increase will be 4 percent or less.

Health Care HR
Businesses may balk at paying workers overtime rates for a variety of reasons, most of them financial. But some health care professionals believe that changes to federal OT regulations slated to start this year could negatively impact quality of care as well.

Management & Leadership
It takes more than a paycheck to keep employees happy. In recent years, we’ve seen various industries leveraging lavish work perks in an effort to one-up the competition and win the "talent wars." But what does it really take to keep employees present, productive and engaged in 2016? At the end of the day, it comes down to addressing employee needs — whether that means career development opportunities or a little assistance reducing the friction in your life outside work. With that in mind, here’s a look at a few rising workplace trends that business leaders need to stay on top of if they want to keep their talent happy.

Patient Satisfaction
A recent informal poll showed that more than three-quarters of those surveyed want access to their medical records, with many respondents saying they wanted access to their record "like yesterday." It might seem obvious that patients voted to view documents that contain information about medical histories, immunization reports, doctors' annotations, diagnoses, and prescriptions. In some cases, accessing records has resulted in patients stepping in to correct important medical errors or oversight, or avoiding duplicate testing.

The United States has the most advanced health care in the world. There are gleaming medical centers across the country where doctors cure cancers, transplant organs and bring people back from near death. But a poll conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health shows that only one-third of Americans say the health care they receive is "excellent." Even fewer people are impressed with the system as a whole.

Physicians & Nurses
Provider organizations across the country are continuously searching for strategies to improve quality and outcomes while also lowering the cost of care. For hospitals and health systems located in states that have not expanded Medicaid coverage, there is a particular need to focus on reining in costs and enhancing services for low-income populations. Improving access to timely data is a key way to do this.

If there's one thing health care leaders can agree on, it's that a good RN is hard to find. But sometimes, the bigger challenge is keeping them on board once they've been discovered. Between the constant pressure to do more with less and the long hours and heavy workload expected of nurses, it's no surprise that nurse burnout is prevalent. But there are strategies to stop burnout in its tracks and avoid nurse turnover, and HR can help.

Health Care & Hospitals
When it's time for medical care, where do Americans go? The doctor's office? An urgent care clinic? Or the nearest hospital? As many as 1 in 3 Americans sought care in an ER in the past two years, according to a recent poll by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. That relatively high frequency may be a matter of convenience, even though many in the poll also report frustration with the cost and quality of care they received in an ER.
