Implementation of Certification and Equipment Requirements
All equipment requirements that were annotated with a superscript "3"-compliance after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.) will go into effect on 19 July 2013.
Requirements for Emergency Evacuation Systems can be found in Section 6.12.3 (Page 125).
Requirements for diving bells, submersible decompression chambers, and closed bells can be found in Section 6.12.2.3 (Page 124).

Interested in contributing to UnderWater magazine?
UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. Possible article topics include, but are not limited to: safety, new techniques, new equipment, equipment reviews, recent projects, etc. Special attention will be given to articles highlighting safety; however, all topics of general interest to diving contractors will be considered. Photography accompanying your story is welcome and encouraged. Here is a chance to highlight and share some of the notable accomplishments of your company or school.

The 2014 ADCI Scholarship Fund Raffle will feature a KM 37 – Stainless Steel (SS) helmet, a state-of- the-art diving harness, and Miller weight belt.  The helmet was donated by Kirby Morgan, and will be signed by Bev Morgan at the U.I. 2014.  The diving harness and weight belt was donated by Divers Supply, Inc.

Tickets for the raffle are $25.00 a piece, and can be purchased from the ADCI office and at U.I. 2014, prior to the last day of the show on 13 February 2014.

For those who are not familiar with the ADCI Scholarship Fund; the fund was set up to assist students with pursuing their higher educational or vocational goals with an award of $4000.00.  Eligibility requirements are provided with the formal announcement that goes out each year.  The Chairperson for the ADCI Scholarship Committee is Mrs. Dori Ritter of Dive Commercial International, Inc.

Any ADCI member company can sponsor a student for award consideration by the Scholarship Committee.   I challenge all ADCI member companies to provide a contribution to the fund.  No amount is too small.  It is our one chance to give back to the community to support our most valuable asset, today’s youth.

Plymouth’s Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) has been renamed DDRC Healthcare, to better reflect its broad role in medical treatments, research and training.
The hyperbaric facility, which carries charitable status, operates within the grounds of Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital. It was originally established at the city’s Fort Bovisand in 1980.

An international team of scientists has embarked on a shipboard expedition to study how the Earth’s crust was pulled apart in an area beneath the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain. The team includes geophysicists from University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science (SOES) based at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK.

Project Nautilus, constructed at the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec), in the UK, is believed to be the World’s first drive train test facility dedicated to the requirements of the marine renewables sector. The aim is to remove the risks associated with in-field power generation, by allowing Narec customers to perform extreme event and accelerated lifetime testing of new tidal power generation devices in a controlled, onshore environment.

James Cameron and his collaborators have made more than 30 dives to the wreck of the Titanic, submerged in more than 2 miles (3.8 kilometers) of water beneath the North Atlantic. His voyages to this most famous shipwreck, enabled by his own technical innovations, such as remotely operated vehicles, have changed historians' knowledge about the Titanic and how it sank.

The University of California at Santa Barbara is one of many universities that are employing underwater metal detectors in their research programs. Hunter Lenihan is a professor of applied marine ecology at UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. He studies the effects of restoration, ecotoxicology and ocean resource management on marine communities.

Sonardyne International Ltd.’s Ranger 2 USBL acoustic positioning system played a role in the recent discovery of the world’s deepest known undersea volcanic vents by a team from the National Oceanography Center (NOC) in Southampton. The expedition used Ranger 2 to track the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Isis from the RRS James Cook, 5,000 meters beneath the surface as it recorded video and imagery whilst collecting samples from the newly discovered vents in the Cayman Trough.

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing recently announced that the Scottish government will create a $27.3m fund dedicated to marine energy projects. The minister said that the incentive to form the fund is the government’s wish to embrace more wave and tidal energy projects to cut its dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Blue Water Ventures International, Inc. announced that it is in negotiations with an unaffiliated R&D technology company to acquire a patent portfolio relating to its long-life battery and generator technology. Upon closing and final development, this technology could streamline the Company's underwater survey operations by enabling extremely long mission profiles. The Company is also assessing the application of this technology to other industries as well. The seller of this technology has preliminarily agreed to accept payment from the Company in the form of its securities rather than cash.

Seatronics Ltd. placed orders totaling £1.7 million with Teledyne TSS within the past three months. The purchases cover no fewer than 56 Meridian Surveyor gyrocompasses and four TSS 440 pipe and cable tracking systems. The Meridian Surveyor gyrocompass and the TSS 440s are developed and manufactured at the Teledyne TSS factory near Watford, U.K. They will be added to the Seatronics inventory of rental equipment in readiness for the forthcoming work season.

Director Tom Nicols of Geomatrix took delivery of his company’s first CSP seismic energy source from Applied Acoustics at Ocean Business in Southampton. EvoLogics extended its ranges of underwater acoustic modems (S2CR series) and combined positioning and communication devices (S2CR USBL series), with new products - the S2CR 42/65 and S2CR 42/65 USBL, high-speed devices with hemispherical beam patterns for transmissions in vertical, slant and horizontal channels. Both devices rely on the EvoLogics patented S2C (Sweep-Spread Carrier) broadband communication technology.

Ashtead Technology purchased £1.3 million of Sonardyne 6G acoustic positioning equipment. This latest acquisition is Ashtead’s second significant order for 6G in the last 12 months, further strengthening the company’s fleet of Compatt 6 transponders, including various sound velocity, digiquartz and inclinometer sensors, GyroCompatts, RovNav 6 LBL transceivers and both omni and directional Wideband Sub Mini transponders.

NEW PRODUCTS AND TECHNOLOGY
Teledyne TSS launched a new gyrocompass changeover system that protects navigation equipment against the danger of a sudden loss of heading input. The new system can be connected to up to four gyrocompasses and has been designed to automatically switch its throughput to that of another gyro should the principal one fail. The system can also be used to enable the manual changeover of gyro throughput if required, and the manufacturer claims it is currently the only system on the market that is capable of covering every failure situation.
