INDUSTRY NEWS
The ADCI and American Salvage Association met at a conference in Panama last month during the XXI Annual General Meeting of the ADCI. With key representatives from relevant Latin American maritime authorities also invited to participate, this program accomplished the goal of building upon strategic alliances, highlighting valuable synergies across the commercial diving and marine salvage communities and further developing relationships with government stakeholders who will require the assistance of our membership during maritime casualties and natural disasters. The meeting was the first since the ASA and ADCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2017 for the promotion of communications and working relations between the two organizations.

Strong currents can turn a salvage project into a slow, risky operation, adding extra challenges to every diving evolution. A team of commercial divers with Maryland-based underwater services firm Phoenix International recently made hull repairs to a bulker anchored in the Mississippi, and they avoided the river's five-knot current altogether - by diving the inside of a ballast tank.

Purple sea urchins are spiny underwater invertebrates that look like pincushions. They’re native to the ocean along the California coast and share their home with sought-after delicacies like red urchin and abalone. Now, after a few years of rapid growth, some people are calling purple sea urchins a scourge.
