The Korean Coast Guard has ordered Saab Seaeye Falcon, a robotic system for undersea investigations and research. The order follows the sinking of the ferry MV Sewol in 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 304 passengers, mostly schoolchildren. The accident generated a need for more response resources including underwater robotic vehicles, as explained by Saab.
 
Greensea's Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of Sales, Marybeth Gilliam, has been appointed Chief Operating Officer, a new position at the company. Gilliam joined Greensea in 2015 and has led the company through a period of sales growth.
 
Nineteen-year-old Kimlee Campher stands to become the first woman in the small harbour sunken vessels programme in Hout Bay to be trained as a commercial diver. The young woman from Portlands, Mitchells Plain, matriculated last year and found employment with Guerrini Marine Construction (GMC) diving and salvage, which was awarded a tender by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to remove sunken wrecks congesting parts of Hout Bay.

Global subsea equipment specialists, Ashtead Technology, has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Steven Thrasher as regional vice president for the Americas.
 
On August 28, 1922, THE Chilean steamship SS Itata, a passenger-cargo vessel that, in a former life, was a warship in the War of the Pacific and the Chilean Revolution of 1891, was traveling from Valparaiso to Coquimbo. The ship ran into heavy weather just off the seaport town of La Higuera. Its rudder was smashed and the ship foundered in the storm. Records indicate that some of its 400 passengers tried to escape on lifeboats, only to be capsized by the waves. Just 13 survivors made it to shore.

Arctic Rays, LLC has released Anglerfish to the wider market - a proven robust miniature self-contained deep-sea LED flasher designed to aid in vehicle recovery. The 380 lumen LED with its 360 degree collimating optic can be seen from a distance as far away as 5 nmi from any direction.
