Phil Newsum, Executive Director of the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI), spoke to Adjacent Oil & Gas about the work being carried out by ADCI and others to ensure health and safety standards in commercial diving are the best they can be.

Since maintenance work began July 5, crews have made 44 hyperbaric "dives" to work on Bertha’s cutter head, replacing 32 cutting tools in the process, Dixon said. Bertha’s cutter head is about 3,088 feet into the tunnel at present, with no estimate as to how much longer maintenance work could take, Dixon said. So far, though, things look promising for work moving ahead without issue.

The researchers working on the project known as SIMPLE will tell you that it’s anything but. It is no small undertaking to design and build a 25-foot-long underwater robot, launch it through a narrow hole drilled through 20 feet of sea ice, allow it to maneuver it autonomously through several kilometers of Antarctic Ocean for hours at a time and program it to pilot itself back to within a few feet of where it started.
