The Association of Diving Contractors International and the MTS ROV Committee have done it again! Underwater Intervention 2014 was a huge success. This year's show brought together stakeholders in the subsea industry for three days of education and networking. Check out the highlights in this episode.
 




This episode breaks down the steps that must be taken before conducting underwater operations. Job planning and Job Hazard Analyses are invaluable tools when assessing and mitigating risk and ensuring adherence to industry practices and regulations. ADCI contractors are committed to best industry practice, quality of work and the safety of their personnel over profit. This commitment reduces the risk of incident, injury and liability to a project's stakeholders.
 





The ADCI has implemented an industry-wide initiative to educate operators in the offshore and inland sectors, both internationally and domestically, on what is at stake when contracting for underwater services. In this episode, we tackle the topic of contractor selection and discuss what an operator should be aware of when looking to hire a diving contractor.

A remote-controlled research sub exploring some of the deepest depths of the Pacific Ocean has been lost.
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution says the Hybrid Remotely Operated Vehicle Nereus was lost during its dive to the Kermadec Trench on Friday. The sub was being operated as part of the Hadal Ecosystems Studies (HADES) Program funded by the US National Science Foundation.

On Tuesday, May 27th, two Massachusetts-based Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams, high school science teams awarded up to 10K to bring invention ideas to life, will showcase their invention projects to President Obama at the White House Science Fair. Among the invited InvenTeam members are: · Natick High School: Katelyn Sweeney and Olivia Van Amsterdam will represent this InvenTeam. The team developed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for ice search and rescue dive teams. · Newton North High School: Felege Gebru and Karen Cheuk-Wing Fan will represent this InvenTeam. The team developed a pedestrian alert system to be used in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to alert drivers of crossing pedestrians and help pedestrians safely cross congested roads.This year’s White House Science Fair will celebrate girls in STEM.

A new American flag is floating in the waters over a former military ship sunk to create an artificial reef in the Florida Keys.
Tuesday marks the fifth anniversary of the sinking of the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg in waters about 7 miles off Key West International Airport.
A group of Navy divers had installed an American flag soon after the wreck’s dedication 60 feet below the surface.

The Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services has commended the US Navy on a special underwater training program conducted for the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Maritime Police team this month.
Permanent Secretary of Police Edmond Sikua expressed gratitude for the US Government for funding the training program which is crucial to develop the underwater capability of the RSIPF for explosive disposal as well as other aspects of policing.

Investigators searching for the missing Malaysian jet have concluded an area where acoustic signals were detected is not the final resting place of the plane after an unmanned submersible found no trace of it, the search coordinator said Thursday.

The National Composites Centre (NCC), in conjunction with the University of Southampton, Solent LEP and partners, is investigating the need for a centre to research and develop the use of advanced materials in the manufacture of large structures needed by sectors such as marine, oil and gas and construction. The study follows a Solent Maritime Forum report which cited a national need for a 'Large Structures Composites Centre'.

The search for missing flight MH370 will rope in the services and more sophisticated equipment of private contractors by way of a tender.
What the authorities are seeking, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, is a contractor who will coordinate an expanded undersea search of a remote patch of the Indian Ocean covering 60,000 sq km.
The contractor will be responsible for bringing together ships, crew and technology to look for the missing jetliner.

Petrobras started-up production on platform P-62 in the Campos Basin’s Roncador field. This is one of the strategic projects in the 2014-2018 Business and Management Plan.
Deployed at a water depth of 1,600 meters, P-62 is an integral part of the Module 4 project for the Roncador field. Twenty-two wells, 14 oil and gas production and eight water-injection, will be connected to the platform.

No connection has been proven between formation of the pit and well after a pit was discovered at a subsea template at Snorre B on 17 May.
On Thursday, an injection test was performed in the well that is tied in to the subsea template. The test confirmed that there is no communication between the well and the pit.

DONG Energy is well on its way with the construction of the first German offshore wind farm, Borkum Riffgrund 1 in the North Sea.
After nine months of construction work, things are now moving fast. On Friday, 16th May 2014, the team completed the first half of the foundation installation when they installed monopile foundation and transition piece number 39 of 78 positions in total.

INS uses a self-contained navigation technique to track the position and orientation of an object relative to a known starting point, orientation, or velocity. Inertial navigation is used in a wide range of applications, including the navigation of aircraft, tactical and strategic missiles, spacecraft, submarines, and ships.
A wide range of forces such as increasing demand for accuracy in navigation, growing aerospace and defense market and high availability of small and robust components will pave the way for INS market to rise significantly in future. Recent advancements in MEMS technology have made it possible to manufacture small, light, and low-cost INS. The increased use of satellite navigation for commercial application will also fuel growth of the INS market in the future. System initialization and error propagation are some of the challenges faced by the INS market.

The company conducted rigorous testing of its liquid gel technology at The Underwater Centre in Fort William to prove its capabilities in a number of real-life operational scenarios.
Head of the firm’s subsea division, Serena Arif believes the solution offers a safer and more efficient way of placing, moving and recovering structures on the seabed. She said: "The introduction of gel lifting into subsea operations has given engineers a truly transformational tool to complete projects. Our LiquiBuoy system can provide an answer to a problem when traditional methods fail.

Mastervolt, the Dutch-based leader in marine electrical systems, has received extensions of the coveted DNV certification for a number of its high capacity Mass battery charger models.
The DNV (Det Norske Veritas) certification allows the equipment to be installed in any marine commercial operation requiring class approval, from offshore support vessels to charter superyachts, and the documentation is recognized throughout the world.
