Implementation of Certification and Equipment Requirements
All equipment requirements that were annotated with a superscript "3"-compliance after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.) will go into effect on 19 July 2013.
Requirements for Emergency Evacuation Systems can be found in Section 6.12.3 (Page 125).
Requirements for diving bells, submersible decompression chambers, and closed bells can be found in Section 6.12.2.3 (Page 124).

Interested in contributing to UnderWater magazine?
UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. Possible article topics include, but are not limited to: safety, new techniques, new equipment, equipment reviews, recent projects, etc. Special attention will be given to articles highlighting safety; however, all topics of general interest to diving contractors will be considered. The Shannon Estuary off the coast of County Clare has become a key European test site for a range of highly advanced ‘smart technologies’ Marine Robots and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The University of Limerick is leading the integration and deployment of the underwater and aerial technologies, within this exercise as part of a European Research Collaboration NETMAR which has Irish, UK, French, Spanish and Portuguese partners.

A great video about the intro to commercial diving.
In 2005 about a dozen of experienced divers got to try some commercial diving equipment in a 2 day special intro given by DIT. The MkV is no longer used by the Navy, or hardly anyone else. The complete suit weighs 187 lbs. This is a composite of several of them. The full DVD is almost an hour long.

A Virginia Beach-based unit helped salvage a sunken Navy patrol boat Thursday.
A Navy Reserve unit based in Jacksonville, Fla., was sailing from Jacksonville to Charleston when the patrol boat transiting into Charleston Harbor hit a jetty late Saturday, a Navy news release said. Members of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 arrived Tuesday, to begin working with the Coast Guard and other officials to recover the boat.

New Smyrna Beach High School's Cuda Robotics team took top overall honors recently at the Florida Regional "Sea Perch" underwater robotics competition.
The student team of Hayley Garris, Josh Mysicka, James Rosa and Zachery Nowels was coached by teacher Dennis Humphrey. The competition, held at the Embry-Riddle pool and the Student Center, included three in-pool events plus a poster presentation to a panel of judges.

"The ocean has been called a bit of outer space...that you can dip your toes in", explains County 4-H Agent Julie Karavan, "it's natural for kids to explore this realm, especially here in Cape May County in the summer time.
This year, 4-H is providing an opportunity for kids to learn about how University scientists explore the ocean using technology".

Last year at this time it was all about the post-Macondo rebound and more drilling opportunities in deepwater and ultradeepwater. Early this year, the rig count in the Gulf returned to pre-Macondo levels, and many say business should continue to improve at least into 2015. This can only translate into more business for offshore service vessel operators.

Belize's Supreme Court yesterday declared offshore oil drilling contracts issued by the government null and void.
The move provides a dramatic and potentially definitive setback to The Government of Belize and the petroleum prospecting companies issued the contracts in 2004 and 2007.

Since the beginning of the upstream industry’s migration from dry land into shallow-water arenas, and subsequently into deeper water depths of 600-plus ft., the development of reserves in ever-greater water depths to 10,000 ft. has brought on significantly greater volumes of reserves, along with greater producing rates. This has required the development of a vast amount of new technology to bring these reserves to the marketplace.

Harkand is investing upwards of US$30 million in expanding its global fleet of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) as the company drives forward with its ambitious growth strategy.
The group has signed a deal with Forum Subsea Technologies that will see it extend its ROV fleet by 25 per cent and create 30 new full time jobs as it positions itself for capitalising on projected growth in the inspection, repair and maintenance market.
