YSI Inc.’s (Yellow Springs, Ohio) EcoMapper AUV, a small, portable vehicle, was used in an October 2011 study to collect bathymetry and water quality data in a mussel farm in Lorbé, Galicia. The AUV has sensors for measuring CTD, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, pH, ORP (oxidation reduction potential) and turbidity, as well as an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and Doppler velocity log. A two-man team equipped with the EcoMapper visited the mussel farm to explore the possibility of collecting data by AUV.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are typically located in water deeper than 1,000 meters and in close proximity to tectonic plate boundaries and submarine volcanic activity. Commercial exploration of SMS deposits requires mapping the seafloor at various scales, from regional mapping (greater than 10,000 square kilometers) to detailed prospect delineation (1 to 10 square kilometers). Vessel-based multibeam echosounder (MBES) surveys are commonly used at the regional scale of mapping. Follow-up detailed high-resolution mapping has been done with either ROVs or deep-towed geosurvey platforms.

Once everything is in place, Tan said the diving operations would begin Tuesday morning. The Coast Guard’s BRP EDSA 2 also stayed at the crash site to assist in the dive since it is equipped with a decompression chamber that could aid divers who might suffer from decompression sickness. A Coast Guard helicopter was also directed to fly back to Masbate today to provide support in the retrieval operations.

Fair seas are ahead for Odyssey Marine (OMEX), the undersea treasure hunter. After the successful salvage of the SS Republic in 2003, the company found and salvaged 17 tons of silver coins from a shipwreck the courts later determined to be a Spanish warship. A federal appeals court held that US law and treaties provide for indefinite Spanish ownership of their sunken warships and cargo. The coins were then transferred to Spain. A new business plan was adopted whereby the identity of a shipwreck would be determined and agreements reached with potential claimants before salvage was commenced.
