Tom Angel – significant contributions to the commercial diving industry, specifically as one of the founding members of the Association of Diving Contractors and being instrumental in the introduction of saturation diving to the Gulf of Mexico. Participation in "Project 600" demonstrated the practicality of saturation diving as it applies to the oil field, as well as setting a world record for open sea diving at the time.

The UK Ministry of Defence announced yesterday that the Royal Navy officially introduced into service its newest submersible asset to improve its mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities: the "Recce" unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). The UUV, manufactured by US-based Hydroid, Inc and based upon the REMUS 600 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), successfully completed trials at the end of last year and has now been handed over to the Royal Navy's Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Unit.

Approximately 100,000 volumes from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library, the world's largest oceanography library, have been digitized and are being made publically accessible as part of a partnership between Google, the University of California and the UC San Diego Libraries. In 2008, UC San Diego became the first Southern California university to partner with Google in its efforts to digitize the holdings of the world's most prominent libraries. Since then, approximately 300,000 volumes and other materials have been digitized from UCSD's International Relations & Pacific Studies Library, the East Asian Language Collection and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library.
