The official dates of the review are 25 September - 25 December, 2010.

Interested in contributing to UnderWater magazine?
UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. Possible article topics include, but are not limited to: safety, new techniques, new equipment, equipment reviews, recent projects, etc. Special attention will be given to articles highlighting safety; however, all topics of general interest to diving contractors will be considered. Photography accompanying your story is welcome and encouraged.

It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display, that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." Additionally, the display will be a significant representation of ADCI and commercial diving for tourists and visitors at the museum.

DCNS is exhibiting at the 3rd international conference & exhibition on ocean energy, from 6 to 8 October, 2010, at the Bilbao Exhibition Center.

DCNS is investigating the full range of marine renewable energy technologies, from offshore wind to tidal energy and ocean thermal energy conversion. With various partners, DCNS is already participating in major demonstrator projects expected to lead to full-scale industrial programmes.

Most people would have said, "To heck with this." But for Jennifer Sullivan, that first dive in the freezing-cold waters in Whittier on that Thanksgiving weekend, sealed the deal.

"I came out of the water, pulled off my hood, and my hair froze like that," she said, snapping her fingers. "I knew then that this was what I was going to do."

Underwater welder. It’s not the first profession that comes to mind when one first meets Sullivan. She’s petite – around 5 feet tall – and not much heavier than 100 pounds. The 30-year-old blond has a quick smile, but a firm handshake.

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, congratulates marine scientists from around the world on the completion of a global Census of Marine Life. The census was conducted by researchers from more than 80 countries who have worked to develop the first comprehensive world-wide catalogue of marine life. The ten-year initiative culminated yesterday with the international release of the results of the census in London, England.

Although 629 Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have been produced to date, they are still regarded as a relatively new technology.

However, considerable investment by research institutes, manufacturers and the military – followed by a number of early commercial deployments – has meant that AUVs are starting to replace and outperform more traditional technology.

Subsea 7 Inc. (OSE Symbol: SUB), one of the world’s leading subsea engineering and construction companies, announced today that it has been awarded a four-year single contractor framework agreement with Shell Upstream International Europe for subsea pipeline installation services across its European offshore fields and facilities. The contract has a further three one-year extension options.

As operator of the Islay Gas Field, Technip has been awarded a contract – worth approximately €70 million – by Total E&P UK Limited, to deliver a full EPCI(1) project in the UK North Sea. The Islay field is located in the North Sea, 440 kilometres north-east of Aberdeen, in 120 metres of water depth.

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) announced that its subsidiary, Teledyne Benthos, Inc., has acquired Hafmynd ehf. Hafmynd, located near Reykjavik, Iceland, designs and manufactures the Gavia, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that is capable of carrying out complex survey missions for commercial, scientific and defense applications. The Gavia AUV's modular architecture enables sensors to be easily integrated and lithium ion battery packs to be exchanged in the field. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

IKM Subsea AS has contracted to lease two Merlin WR200 ROVs for one year, with a one-year option. IKM also will supply personnel, engineering, and operations support for the ROVs. Over two years, the contract is valued at NOK100 million ($17 million).

The French company Jifmar Offshore Services has ordered two Saab Seaeye Cougar XT ROVs for a new Algerian contract. This project will involve work at three different oil terminal points where the ROVs will be used for inspection, maintenance and repair (IRM) tasks on structures, pipes, manifolds and the umbilicals at five SPM buoys.

Acteon company OIS has successfully completed a suspended well abandonment campaign in the UK North Sea, involving four individual operators. A total of six wells in Categories 1, 2.1 and 2.2 were abandoned, including three for Nexen and one each for Dana Petroleum and Premier Oil. The operation to abandon the well for Premier Oil (Category 1) was slightly unusual in that, in this case, the tree was still in place following the well’s earlier suspension.

The team has been excavating the seabed at a wreck in European waters, where the divers have been forced to rely upon instinct and touch to find their way around the site. Despite these difficulties, the divers have been able to work effectively by employing a 2001 3D sonar from Marine Electronics Ltd. (MEL) to scan the site before each session.

The Bowtech Leak Detection System is a bespoke solution for identifying leaks in pipelines, risers and subsea wellhead equipment. It includes an LED lamp which emits a green light for excitation of fluorescent tracer dye and a high resolution, low-light-sensitive camera fitted with a filter to enable the detection of the fluorescing dye.
