90-Day Public Review Announcement

The draft of the ADCI Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations, 6th Ed. has been approved by the Board of Directors for public review.

The draft will be posted on the ADCI Web site via a designated link. There will be a separate announcement to notify the membership that the link is up, kicking off the start of the review period. The review process will be open to all industry stakeholders.

The official dates of the review period are 25 September – 25 December 2010.

It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." Additionally, the display will be a significant representation of ADCI and commercial diving for tourists and visitors at the museum.

WASHINGTON – The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has revealed a previously unknown type of oil-eating bacteria, which is suddenly flourishing.

Scientists discovered the new microbe while studying the underwater dispersion of millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf following the explosion of BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

Just months after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster killed eleven rig workers and injured 17 others, the Gulf of Mexico has been faced with a second and unfortunately similar tragedy. Yesterday morning, the Vermillion Block 380 oil platform owned by Mariner Energy went up in flames just 100 miles from the coast, leaving 13 oil rig workers afloat in the Gulf and clinging to each other in orange survival suits.

A wave energy generation test site called the "Wave Hub" is being set up off Cornwall’s northern coast. The site is the first offshore wave energy site in the UK, and will allow four wave energy generator systems, with a total capacity of 20 MW, to be evaluated simultaneously.

FORAN has been the CAD/CAM system used for the engineering of the Acergy Havila Project, a new Diving Support Vessel (DSV) built after the agreement between Acergy and Havila Shipping. As there were many companies involved in the project, different subcontractors have acquired the new FCM module, which is a FORAN solution developed by SENER for visualization and checking purposes.

Gulf Keystone announces the commencement of drilling operations on its Shaikan-3 appraisal well, effective September 2, 2010. This is a shallow appraisal well, very close to the Shaikan-1 well, the site of last year’s discovery of the giant Shaikan oil field. The company has a 75 percent working interest in the block.

A Rotherham company has become one of the first in the world to unveil a naval safety system that will monitor activity on a ship's bridge and automatically raise the alarm if it spots a potential accident or emergency. Martek Marine – a global leader in environmental and safety monitoring technology for ships – developed the Navgard system in response to increased risks to shipping and new naval laws. New international maritime legislation means that over 100,000 ships will be required to fit alarm systems of this type.

Using the same technology proven in its existing C-Quester models, which can dive to depths of up to 100 meters (328 feet), Dutch luxury submarine manufacturer U-Boat Worx has announced a new line of exploration submersibles certified for diving to depths from 100 to 1,000 meters (328 to 3,280 feet). Named C-Explorers, the new line of diving machines are available in configurations for one to six passengers and are being marketed to scientists, research organizations, luxury superyacht owners, aquatic tourism ventures and private explorers.
