90 Day Public Review Announcement

The draft of the ADCI Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations, 6th Ed. has been approved by the Board of Directors for public review.

The draft will be posted on the ADCI Web site via a designated link. There will be a separate announcement to notify the membership that the link is up, kicking off the start of the review period. The review process will be open to all industry stakeholders.

The official dates of the review period are 25 September – 25 December 2010.

It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." Additionally, the display will be a significant representation of ADCI and commercial diving for tourists and visitors at the museum.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England (SNNE) crews will partner with Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) members to demonstrate a robust tidal energy program on Aug. 24, 2010. Gov. John Baldacci, Congressman Mike Michaud and Capt. James McPherson, SNNE’s commander, will unite at Coast Guard Station Eastport to celebrate the first-ever successful implementation of tidal energy at a federal facility.

A "flying eyeball" has helped the Homer Department of Fish and Game biologists study fish populations for the past five years.

Project manager Kenneth Goldman said he uses the camera-equipped robot, called a remotely operated vehicle, to count yelloweye rockfish and lingcod. The robot itself is a bit bigger than a hard rifle case and weighs 300 pounds outside of the water. Research biologists operate the unmanned robot from a boat with a set of joysticks on a movable console.

Fredoon Kapadia has been a commercial diver for the last nine years. He has just returned from a two-month assignment in Saudi Arabia and is enjoying being on land.

He doesn't make any bones about telling you he makes good money, but that was not always the case. "Money wasn't very good in the initial years, but today I make in two days what some of my friends would in a month," remarks Kapadia.

REGULATORY NEWS
The Federal Government is preparing to reform its shipping registry and maritime laws, paving the way to bring more locally owned vessels under its jurisdiction and boost the nation’s shipping sector. An amendment to the nation’s maritime laws has been drafted by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and submitted to the UAE Government, and the provisions could become law by the end of this year.

"We are revamping the whole registry," said Nasser Saif al Mansoori, the director general of the NTA. "We intend to operate as an international flag on similar lines as Singapore, the Marshall Islands, Denmark and Norway."
The new provisions include a more flexible approach to crewing and taxes while not compromising on safety and security, officials said.

LinkQuest recently introduced the FlowScout 600 acoustic flow meter based on innovative acoustic Doppler technology. The single-beam FlowScout 600 acoustic flow meter is capable of reaching up to 110m in range with an accuracy of up to 0.5% +/- 2.0 mm/s. The operating frequency of the FlowScout 600 system is 600 kHz. The standard depth rating of the system is 100m. The FlowQuest system is typically used to precisely measure water velocities in water channels and rivers. It can be easily installed on an irrigation channel bank, a bridge abutment, or a river bank.
