The 2008 Georgia Youth Summit will be held Sept. 20-22 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton. Volunteers are needed to assist county teams of youth and adults as they develop plans to address local issues. In order to help local government officials understand the new state aid program and application process, several training workshops will be held across the state beginning in August. LGRMS is offering a one-day training program covering the 12 high-risk/critical tasks in law enforcement operation. Agrosecurity Awareness Training will be offered (free of charge) on Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 in Macon/Bibb County for those who have a potential role in responding to an agricultural incident. This training provides information on the scope of agriculture in Georgia and impacts of terrorism or disaster, recognition of potential threats, notification procedures, and how to better prepare your community for an agriculture or food emergency. ACCG encourages county commissioners and staff with an interest in environmental issues to attend the 3rd Annual Georgia Environmental Conference, the state's largest and most comprehensive environmental educational gathering. Presenting will be an array of environmental professionals seeking to exchange knowledge and share ideas around environmental concerns in Georgia.

 
The 2008 Governor's Tourism Conference will be held Sept. 10-12 in Albany/Dougherty County. This dynamic conference will provide enhanced programs, excellent speakers and fantastic opportunities to network with tourism industry leaders. This conference offers an opportunity to learn more about how the property tax works in Georgia and about assessment limitations and levy caps. Designed for state and local elected officials, the conference will unravel some of the complexity of property taxes in Georgia, will discuss policies for reducing or controlling property taxes, and will provide an objective, unbiased perspective on assessment limitations and property tax levy caps based on experiences in other states. The conference is open and is free other than lunch, which will be available for $10, payable at the conference.

 
The next Georgia Brownfields Academy will be held on Sept. 18 in Rome/Floyd County. The Georgia Brownfields Academy is an educational and networking opportunity offered twice a year to public and private sector professionals interested in redeveloping brownfield sites. NACo is sponsoring two national green competitions for county governments from July 1 through Nov. 30. At the conclusion of the competitions three winning counties (small, medium and large) for each campaign will be determined based upon the percent of county residents who participated.

 
One of Georgia county government's very own, Dr. Van G. Whaler, Butts County administrator, recently released his first book entitled: "Memoirs of a Government Amnesia Victim," which details his thoughts and experiences in dealing with local government for four decades.
