The 2008 session will be remembered more for the legislation that was defeated than the legislation that was passed. Local governments seemed to come under constant fire right up to the last hour of the 40th day. In the end, several pieces of legislation of particular detriment to local governments were defeated. The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service and the Georgia Urban Forest Council announces the Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF) Grant Program. The program is designed to encourage communities to create and support long-term and sustained urban and community forestry programs throughout Georgia. Grant applications due May 9, 2008.

 
To honor the work that local newspapers perform, the Georgia Press Association is seeking nominations for the Community Service Award. The award honors one newspaper in Georgia each year for a contribution of lasting social importance to its local community. Nominations are due by May 16, 2008.
