U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao swore in Rear Adm. Mark H. Buzby (USN, Ret.) as Administrator of the Maritime Administration at a ceremony in Washington on August 14.  Among the invited guests was AAPA President Kurt Nagle.

The Port of Los Angeles achieved record clean air gains while moving more cargo than ever, according to the port’s 2016 Inventory of Air Emissions. The annual report also shows the port surpassed its 2020 goal for reducing the health risk of emissions from port-related activity.

In another step aimed at curbing diesel emissions from ships, the Port of Oakland has approved a high-voltage cable system that will connect more vessels to the port’s landside power grid.
 
 
   
Port Freeport has begun construction on a 250-acre rail development project that will be devloped into a multimodal industrial park complete with new warehousing facilities for plastic resins packaging, cross-docking activities and distribution centers. Port Houston broke ground August 16 for a new container yard for empty containers at Bayport Container Terminal.
 
An August 14 ribbon-cutting marked the operational startup of a multi-product liquid marine terminal located within the tri-parish jurisdiction of the Port of South Louisiana. The terminal is beginning operations with one dock, a two-bay truck rack and four tanks with storage capacity for up to 424,000 barrels of refined products and biofuels.

Seven companies are this year’s recipients of grant money from The Port of Virginia® Economic and Infrastructure Development Grant Program. That program is designed to encourage investment, reinvestment and job creation among companies in Virginia that are port users.
 
PortMiami and the Port Authority of Dakar became parties to an International Sister Seaport Agreement at a ceremony August 9 at the PortMiami Executive Conference Room.

The board of commissioners of the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District has appointed Richert L. Self, PPM®, deputy executive director of the Port of Lake Charles. He will serve as deputy to Executive Director Bill Rase. The city of Saint John has appointed David Emerson to a three-year term on the board of directors of Port Saint John, effective August 19, 2017.  He succeeds Kathryn Craig, who had served on the port authority board since 2014.
 
AAPA Sustaining Member S&P Global Ratings is requesting comments on proposed criteria for U.S. and Canadian Not-For-Profit Transportation Infrastructure Enterprises.
 
Port Everglades gained access to a Northern European ocean-shipping route via the 2M Alliance starting August 16, 2017.
 
2017 is shaping up as a record year for the Port of Longview.  The mid-year total of 5.2 million metric tons exceeded by nearly 10 percent the first half 2016 total. New data indicate the Port of Oakland this year may receive its second-fewest container ship visits in a decade even as container volumes climb to record levels.
