Work is underway at Virginia International Gateway (VIG) on a $320-million expansion project that will nearly double the terminal’s annual cargo handling capability. This is the first of two large-scale expansion projects that together will increase overall annual container capacity at the Port of Virginia by 40 percent, or 1.0 million container units, by 2020.

Millions of dollars in seaport-related investments are included in the 10-year capital budget approved February 16 by the board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Overall, the plan proposes $29.5 billion in direct spending on port authority projects and a $2.7 billion commitment to support debt service on a passenger rail tunnel project.
 
 
   
The Port of Coos Bay’s Charlestown Shipyard recently received a welcome addition - a 100-metric ton Travel Lift purchased by the port to accommodate local fishing and recreational fleets.
 
 
   
A survey commissioned by the Nanaimo Port Authority in December 2016 found that customers and stakeholders are "satisfied to exceptionally satisfied" with NPA in each of 15 areas probed. The results follow a year of skyrocketing growth for the port’s log and containerized cargo trades.
 
 
   
Nearly 5,000 metric tons of malted barley arrived from Canada recently at the Port of Longview for export to Guatemala. The cargo was discharged from rail cars onto a conveyor for direct delivery to vessel without intermediate handling.

The University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) has presented its 2017 William K. Smith Distinguished Service Award to Vanta Coda, executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, for his leadership in freight transportation and logistics and contributions to leadership, mentorship and education of future leaders in private sector freight transportation.  The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on February 13 named Port of Long Beach senior executive Sean Gamette as the managing director of engineering services. The board of commissioners of the Port of Vancouver USA on February 14 confirmed the appointment Julianna Marler as CEO/executive director.  She is the port’s first female chief executive.
 
Carnival Cruise Line is adding Havana to Carnival Paradise’s Port Tampa Bay-based sailings beginning this summer.  The four- and five-day itineraries will include overnight visits to Cuba’s capital city.
 
The Port of Brownsville recently launched a redesigned website at www.portofbrownsville.com.

2016 was another record year for public marine terminals in the Port of Baltimore, with general cargo throughput exceeding10 million short tons for the first time ever and container traffic at an all-time high. The Port of Los Angeles reports container throughput last month totaled handled 826,640 TEUs, an increase from last year of 17.4 percent. That made it the port’s busiest January ever and its second busiest month overall, after last November’s 877,564 TEUs.
