The Port of Long Beach is helping to clear a backlog of empty cargo containers caused by the August 31 bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping through an agreement with terminal operator Total Terminals International (TTI). The arrangement with TTI will bring in a container ship to remove up to 4,300 empty containers and free up the chassis they sit on.

Port Saint John took delivery October 29 of two post-Panamax-sized gantry cranes. Expected to be operational beginning January 2017, each crane can service vessels of up to 6,500 TEUs, or nearly double the capacity of vessels the port’s existing cranes can handle. 
 
PortMiami is due to receive Florida state grants totaling $33 million over the next five years. The good news comes as the port is reporting another record-breaking year for both cargo and cruise passengers. The infusion of state funds will help ensure the port can effectively respond to future growth.
 
 
   
Port Everglades launched the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) approved Mobile Passport Control (MPC) program for cruise ship travel on November 4. MPC lets debarking U.S. citizens with a passport to complete their Customs declarations using smartphones or other mobile devices, expediting the terminal clearance process. 

Beginning in January 2018, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle will join the 2,052 Carnival Paradise in offering four-, five- and seven-day Caribbean itineraries year round from Port Tampa Bay to an estimated 320,000 guests annually.

Port Corpus Christi has joined the Green Marine environmental certification program, a North American initiative committed to advancing environmental excellence in maritime transportation. 

Diesel emissions from trucks serving the Port of Oakland declined 98 percent between 2005 and 2015. In that same timeframe, ship emissions dropped 75 percent, according to the findings of the port’s latest environmental emissions inventory.
 
 
   
The ports of New Orleans and Greater Baton Rouge will acquire specialized container loading equipment for the container-on-barge shuttle service operated by SEACOR AMH between Baton Rouge and New Orleans with a newly announced grant of $1.75 million from the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD).
 
The TP10/Amberjack all-water Asia/U.S. East Coast container service operated jointly by Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) now includes North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington. Ten container vessels in the 4,300-5,100 TEU capacity range are deployed in the service, which made its Wilmington debut with the docking in early October of the SeaLand Lightning.
