AAHOA Treasurer Biran Patel will speak on a panel next week at the Latino Hotel Association Conference in Dallas. Entitled Hotel Investment 101, the panel will encourage participants to discuss successes with past investments and forecast future trends. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, "Overall U.S. RevPAR was +1.8% Y/Y for the week ending 6/16/2018, per STR, down than the prior week's result of 2.3%. (2-year stacked RevPAR was +3.1% vs. +3.0% in the prior week.) Independent hotels (about 1/3rd of the data set) were +1.6% y/y. Luxury (+2.6%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Upper Midscale was the weakest at +0.9%. Midscale (+1.7%) performed roughly in-line with the overall US hotel industry average." The panel included five experts who shared insights about how technology is creating new opportunities, as well as new challenges for individuals in the hospitality industry. "Today's technology in the hospitality space, I believe, is extremely myopic," says Ash Kapur, senior vice president of hotel asset management and chief revenue officer at Starwood Capital Group. Amazon is partnering with Marriott International and placing Echo devices in select hotel rooms. The device includes functions such as in-room concierge services, room temperature adjustment, lighting controls, and voice commands. Although guests will not have the ability to link their personal Amazon accounts to their hotel room, the wide range of features that are available remains attractive to guests. (Source: Bustle)
  
According to data from Lodging Econometrics, the global construction pipeline is up seven percent by hotel projects year-over-year. The pipeline currently stands at 12,714 hotel projects and the number of hotel projects that are scheduled to begin construction in the next year rose by six percent. (Source: Hotel Management)
