According to the latest quarterly consumer confidence survey released by the Siena Research Institute (SRI), overall consumer confidence increased in all New York State metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the fourth quarter 2012.Home buying plans increased in five of New York’s MSAs, while falling in four.

With 11 months of data reported, 2012 will be counted as a record year for favorable housing affordability conditions, according to the National Association of REALTORS (NAR). For all of 2012, NAR projects the index to be a record-high 194, up from 186 in 2011, which was the previous record.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
The State Appellate Division unanimously agreed to order election officials to open an additional 99 ballots in the 46th Senate District race between Republican George Amedore and Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk. Amedore has petitioned to appeal the ruling to the State Court of Appeals, the highest court in New York. While deciding whether or not it will hear Amedore’s appeal, the Court of Appeals has instructed election officials to wait on counting the 99 ballots.

During the one-day meeting of the Legislature last week, each chamber elected new leaders to serve during the 2013-14 legislative session. In the Senate, Senator Dean Skelos (R- Rockville Center) and Senator Jeffery Klein (D- Bronx) were both elected President Pro Tempore. Skelos was also elected as the Republican Conference Leader, Klein was elected the Independent Democratic Conference Leader, and Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins (D-Westchester) was elected to serve as the Democratic Minority Leader.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released his latest debt report last week, which indicates that New York is roughly $63.3 billion in debt and fast approaching its debt capacity.

NYSAR’s Code of Ethics and Professional Standards Training will be offered January 31 at the Clarion Hotel in Batavia, NY and on February 1 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ithaca, NY. This course provides attendees with an update on professional standards, Code of Ethics and enforcement procedures, plus other changes adopted by NAR's Board of Directors or Delegate Body. It also satisfies both NAR's new member and quadrennial ethics training requirement.
